Award-winning Santo Domingo Pueblo artist Joseph Coriz created this Sterling Silver Overlay and 7-strand very rare Natural Ithica Peak turquoise heishi necklace with reversible pendant. The "Blessings and Migration" turtle pendant tells a story on each side. One side features a natural Turquoise stone at the center of a peaceful Pueblo in harmony (symbolized by corn and the healing rain reaching down from the celestial heaven). On the reverse side is a blessing and migration scene. Celestial phenomena and ancient petroglyphs of sacred hands and the migration are among the symbols representing the connectedness of the celestial to the people and to their heritage. The animals are called forth to bring their individual powers and wisdom to the village. The bear represents strength, introspection, and the power of the soul, and tells us to walk our path with purpose. The ram represents the security of a sturdy and increasing flock. The fish represents sacred water and sustaining family, clan, and village. All the animals rest within the turtle, a symbol of Mother Earth, and are blessed by the power of celestial phenomena, which bring the sacred, healing rain. And altogether they represent the spiritual and physical well-being for the Pueblo. The starry night above depicts the connectedness of the people to the celestial powers, to their heritage and to their ancestors. This pendant is suspended from a sterling barrel depicting lightning and rain showering celestial blessings over the pueblo, and hangs from a necklace of hand-ground natural turquoise heishi, connected at the top with sterling barrel keepers featuring more scenes of blessing and migration. The necklace is finished off with a handmade hook and eye and another natural stone. The necklace measures 22 1/2" including the clasp at the top, which measures approximately 5". The turtle pendant measures approximately 3 1/4” by 2” at the widest. This is a stunning example of Joseph's signature style of Pueblo storytelling in overlay.
