Item Details
Fetish necklace, circa 1980's, by the late Robert Kaniatobe (Choctaw), titled "Signs of Past Present." Fetishes are handcarved of 3,000 to 5,000 year old fossil walrus ivory (bird, frog, feet), and buffalo bone (bears). Beads are ancient glass and clay (possibly 1,000 years old); handcarved agate 1600's; also Venetian and Czechoslovakian glass trade beads including "feather" glass, 1700's to 1800's; Peking glass 1920's; "vaseline" glass 1860's; also brass and copper. The rings symbolize continuity in the universe. The necklace measures approximately 24" at the longest (the three strands are graduated and lay flat), plus the center bear which hangs down approximately 1" and measures 2 3/4" from nose to end. The other fetishes vary in size from 1" to 1 1/2" long. Complete with original pouch and handwritten card detailing the materials and Robert's original registration number (#31186). A rare and fabulous find from an awesome artist.
